Swedish

The most traditional modality here in the states, this technique is used for relaxation and light relief of muscle pain through long, slow gliding strokes using massage oil to create a wave-like tempo to your massage. This is what you’ve probably seen in the movies, sometimes we call it a “fluff and buff.” This is your choice if you don’t want too much pressure and want to zone out / zen out.

Deep Tissue

Like Swedish with some oomf behind it, Deep Tissue massage is for clients who like a little (or a lot) more pressure. This technique can be used for relaxation or more functional massages.

Sports

A modality that can be integrated into other massages or used on its own, “Sports,” usually denotes some action on the client’s behalf (resistance, stretching, etc) as well as sometimes shorter, clothes sessions focused on particular muscle groups.

Prenatal

This one is for the ladies (but fellas, listen closely). Perfect for all the aches, pains, and anxieties of pregnancy, prenatal massages take into account the particular needs of those who are gestating, from position and draping to bathroom breaks, stretching, and creating more space for mom to breathe. Can be purely relaxation, to add mobility and relieve pain, or both.

Myofascial Release/Trigger Point

Modalities developed in the 20th century by practitioners in North America, both Myofascial Release and Trigger Point therapy involve more concentrated, slow strokes with the goal of releasing both fascia and trigger points (stubborn knots) in muscles.

Cupping

In this modality, through suction, the skin is drawn into the cup by creating a vacuum in the cup placed on the skin over the targeted area. We use silicone “cups” with a depressible top – no heat and no suction guns. The cup is usually left in place for somewhere between five and fifteen minutes and placed based on muscle tension. Can help treat pain, scar tissues in the muscles and connective tissue, muscle knots, swelling, blockage, and more.

Ashiatsu

Performed by certified therapists with bars installed in the ceiling, Ashiatsu Oriental Bar Therapy is the deepest, most luxurious massage available. Used to help clients relax, work problem areas, increase mobility, and target trigger points, Ashiatsu massage is performed using the therapists clean, washed hands and feet! We’ve never had anyone not prefer ashi once they tried it – a great option for anyone who has been cleared by their health professional for deep work.
